SLOW DÉCOR FOR AN INTENTIONAL LIFESTYLE.

A vessel made by fire and shaped by hands that knew exactly what they were doing. The amber flush on the upper body is not glaze. It is where the kiln flame touched the clay during firing and left its mark permanently.

This is an antique French terracotta oil jug, 19th century, in the tradition of the great pottery making regions of southwest France and Provence. The form is the cruche à huile, a vessel evolved over generations for storing and decanting oil, its shape completely determined by function and entirely beautiful because of it. The wide ovoid body tapers to a narrow neck with a rolled rim, three handles in total, two generous loop handles at the shoulder and a smaller handle at the neck, and a low side spout for controlled pouring. This triple handle and spout configuration is characteristic of the finest examples of this form and all features are present here in excellent condition.

The surface is almost entirely unglazed, the raw buff terracotta worn smooth and textured with age, the throwing marks of the potter's hands still faintly visible on the body. The warm amber orange flush on the upper body and shoulder is kiln flash, produced when flame caught the vessel during firing and permanently altered the colour of the clay. The transition from pale sandy buff below to warm amber above is irregular, natural and completely unrepeatable. No two pieces fired this way are the same.

These jugs were used for storing and decanting walnut and olive oil in southwest France, particularly in Périgord, where nut oil was essential for cooking, lighting and soapmaking. The form is now genuinely rare to find.

Condition is good. Honest age and surface wear throughout, consistent with genuine antique use.

Sourced in France.

One of the most characterful and historically grounded pieces in this collection. Works beautifully holding dried botanicals, olive branches or a single large stem. Equally compelling on a kitchen shelf, a hearth, a dining table or simply on the floor in a corner where the scale and the surface can be properly appreciated.
