Antique French Terracotta Égouttoir (Strainer Plate) from La Guillotière

An honest piece of French kitchen history, shaped by hand and time.

A Plate with a Story

This beautifully worn French égouttoir, or strainer plate, was crafted in the late 19th to early 20th century by the La Guillotière pottery workshop, known for producing sturdy, everyday earthenware for provincial homes.

Traditionally used for draining fresh cheeses, rinsing garden vegetables, and preparing fruits, the égouttoir was an essential tool in French country kitchens. Each drainage hole on this piece was individually pierced by hand, giving it its wonderfully organic feel and subtle irregularities that speak to its handmade origins.

The warm, golden ochre glaze is classic of rural French pottery, developed not for decoration but for durability and daily use, and now prized for its rich, earthy character.
