What's so special about Marseille Soap?

What's so special about Marseille Soap?

You might have heard reference to Marseille soap (‘Savon de Marseille’) as being something really rather special before. This uniquely French product conjures up notions of naturally-pure quality, traditional functionality and rustic charm, even for the uninitiated. French soap deserves a special mention simply because it IS special.

A big part of the appeal is that we all instinctively know that the most effective products are often the time-honoured traditional ones – and Savon de Marseille has been a ‘thing’ for over 600 years! Such was its importance in French society that Louis XIV felt compelled to enshrine its composition in law (only pure vegetable oils and never animal fat!)

To be considered genuine, the formula must contain 100% natural ingredients and a minimum of 72% oil. Only a master soap-maker can create this unique blend, and it takes around 10-14 days to perfect using the traditional methods passed down through the centuries – you’ll know it’s the real deal if you see the ‘Savon de Marseille’ stamp on the side.

There are good reasons for this enduring popularity. This hard-working multitasker is a must-have staple product in homes around the world - and its uses go far beyond that of an average bar of soap.

So, what else can you use it for? Here are just a few suggestions for using this all-natural wonder product.

 Naturally gentle skincare

Naturally hypoallergenic, genuine Savon de Marseille features an extraordinarily high oil content – typically olive oil, making it ultra-moisturising and nourishing for the skin. Free from colourants and artificial fragrances, you can use it regularly on the face and body for all-natural and gentle cleansing.

Traditionally pure haircare

For centuries, French women have been using Savon de Marseille to wash their hair. It contains only natural cleansing agents and the purest oils, making it an ideal choice for anyone looking to ditch the harsh abrasives in many modern shampoos.

Hard-working home use

Savon de Marseille has multiple uses in the home. It will lift stubborn stains from your linens and other laundry, and you can even shave off a few flakes and add it to your machine in place of harsh detergents for an all-natural clothes wash. You can use it to wash the dishes, clean the toilet and scrub your floors. We’ve even seen it used as a pet shampoo! The possibilities are endless.

Seriously Sparkling Silver

Nothing makes your silver shine quite like Savon de Marseille. Dissolve some soap flakes in some hot water and let your jewellery soak before buffing it off – you won’t believe the results!

We are proud to stock this versatile and eco-friendly multitasker in our shop. Savon de Marseille is a simple, traditional and incredibly useful iconic French product that perfectly embodies what Atelier Chatelaine is all about – authentically French solutions that work hard, do good and look beautiful.
