SLOW DÉCOR FOR AN INTENTIONAL LIFESTYLE.

A French 1900s oil on canvas, pulled over a wooden frame and secured with rivets. This painting is signed by the artist and dated 1889.

The painting depicts an impressionist view of a serene riverscape. A demure and bucolic afternoon in the late summer or early autumn, ladies with parasols and men in straw hats with oars at the helm. A fabulous piece with craquelure, though it's been protected by a coat of varnish.

Craquelure (FrenchcraquelureItaliancrettatura) is a fine pattern of dense cracking formed on the surface of materials. It can be a result of drying, shock, aging, intentional patterning, or a combination of all four. The term is most often used to refer to tempera or oil paintings, but it can also develop in old ivory carvings or painted miniatures on an ivory backing. Recently, analysis of craquelure has been proposed as a way to authenticate art.

This piece is smooth to the touch and measures 32cm x 46cm.

Please be advised that all items in our Vintage Collection are second-hand pieces with a previous life. All cosmetic marks, stains, bumps and signs of wear are part of the natural character and beauty of vintage pieces.
