Made from the early 1800s, vintage European grain sacks are the quintessential textile to add authenticity to your vintage farmhouse, cottage or country decor.
Early European grain sacks were made from hemp and flax and were handmade right on the farms on which the hemp or flax was grown. After harvesting, the hemp was cleaned, spun into thread and subsequently woven into a heavy, durable fabric. That fabric was used to make large bags for grain, feed and other agricultural products for efficient transport from farm to marketplace. Many sacks were branded with the logo of the farm, monogrammed with the owner's initials or a distinctive striping pattern with colour. This way, the sacks and their contents could be easily identified and connected to a particular farm.
This grain sack is a standout! The simple concept of a black plaid with a single red stripe on natural linen translates into the most beautiful piece! This would look gorgeous draped over a table, as a runner.
Use it directly as a table runner or wall decor, or use it to make anything from aprons, pillows or as upholstery.
